Natural Awakenings is throwing a seed party and we're invited! So are representatives from the Bucks County Beekeepers Association, Doylestown Fresh, and the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance. So let's join the party!
It's never too late to learn about and plant seeds in your garden. According to Vegetable Gardening in the Northeast by Marie Iannotti, May is a great month to plant sweet potatoes, beans, broccoli raab, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, melon, okra, pumpkin, rutabaga and squash. On Saturday, May 3, 2014, gardeners of all skill levels will gather at Doylestown Fresh for Save the Seed: A Community Seed Exchange from 9 to 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, and you do not have to bring your own seeds to participate.
Traditionally, seed exchanges are attended by gardeners who have excess seeds they don’t plan to use, including seeds from their most successful yields. By using seeds from previous bountiful yields, future harvests can turn out to be overwhelmingly successful. Many of the seeds that are “swapped” are also specific to plants that are appropriate to grow in our region and climate.
"Some of the most productive gardens are sown using seeds from a seed exchange,” said coordinator Audrey Chen. “Gardeners of all levels can learn from other gardeners’ experiences. It's also a great opportunity to discover seeds you may not be familiar with and learn what works and what doesn't.”
Tables will be available for local gardeners to display information and resource materials. Representatives from the Bucks County Beekeepers Association, Doylestown Fresh, Doylestown Food Co-op, the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance and more will be on hand to give information and answer questions. All attendees should bring containers to take home newly acquired seeds. Attendees bringing seeds to share should include growing instructions.
