Dust off that Jar of Turmeric
We all have had that strange little bottle of bright yellow/orange powder in our spice racks for years, having purchased it for a single recipe, and maybe never uncapped it again. Well, now is the time to break out the turmeric (probably should get a new one by now) and let it shine. As it turns out, turmeric is a powerful anti-oxidant and a potent anti-inflammatory. Studies have linked its health benefits to cancer prevention and treatment, cardiac health, Alzheimer’s prevention, eye health, weight loss and more.
Making Turmeric part of your 2017 health regimen is a great idea; but you do need to be careful. Many brands are not what they claim to be, so staying as natural as possible is your best bet. Here are some tips:
- First and foremost, read up on the benefits and possible side-effects of turmeric.
- Make sure you buy organic, non-irradiated turmeric.
- Look for a turmeric extract that contains at least 95% standardized curcumin and no additional ingredients.
- Remember that a little goes a long way.
- And, whatever you do, don’t wear white!
Of course you can purchase turmeric in the bulk spice section of the Doylestown Food Market all year round. And right now, we have fresh turmeric in our produce section too!
