John LaSala, Director, Board President
John and his son, Bryan, have been residents of Bucks County for 20 years and moved to Doylestown several years ago. John is a healthy omnivore who leans heavily vegetarian, and who loves fresh local food. After leaving the world of global corporations behind, John has become very involved in volunteer and professional activities that promote the local community and the environment. The Co-op is a perfect blend of these two heartfelt themes, helping families enjoy nutritious, fresh, flavorful food, and helping our farmers make a living on the land, thus making it more likely to preserve that land for future generations.
John volunteers with the Co-op on the Board and the Fund Raising Committee, and also with the Heritage Conservancy, Buy Fresh Buy Local, and the Women’s Business Forum. John also is a musician, and plays regularly with the Back Porch Jug Band. Check them out sometime!
Paul Weinstein, Secretary
Paul and his wife, Debbie, have lived in Doylestown since 1992. Their two adult daughters now live in New York City and Boston. When they heard about the Doylestown Food Co-op from their friend Kira Kraiman, they immediately became members. Debbie is a Holistic MD practicing in Lahaska and an Eco-Partner. Paul and Debbie have been eating organic and sustainably raised food for many years. Paul recently retired from 30 years in the wholesale plumbing industry and became a Director. He hopes to contribute his experience in personnel management, sales and marketing to the success of the Doylestown Food Market. He is committed to supporting local agriculture and making organic, healthy foods more available in our community.
Neal, his wife Leslie, and sons Andrew and Harry have gone through the life transformation of realizing the importance of what they eat. For Neal personally, reading Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma was a turning point. As Pollan puts it so beautifully: Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.
Leslie became a member of the original Doylestown Food Buying Club and remembers well the days of driving from farm to farm picking up local products for distribution nights. Many of those farms’ products are now available at our wonderful market!
In 2011, after a conversation with board member and long-time family friend Kira Kraiman, Neal decided to become more involved, and before long he was a board member as well. Neal is proud to have played a part in the formation of the first brick-and-mortar store. The Carsons say that the hard work everyone put into the startup was well worth it, because they now have this treasure called the Doylestown Food Market to do their local grocery shopping!
Jacqueline is a long time resident of Bucks County and lives in Doylestown borough with her husband and son. In addition to her role as Board Director and Outreach Coordinator with theDoylestown Food Market, she provides a range of professional development services to individuals and small businesses. Jacqueline is familiar with being an active co-op member from her Weavers Way days when she first arrived in Philadelphia and resided in Mt. Airy. She loved everything about that initial co-op experienceand likewise, loves being fully engaged with the Doylestown Food Market. Jacqueline is passionate about organic and locally grown foods, and supporting local farmers and producers. She also loves being involved in a great community of like-minded residents who gather to share information and ideas.
Kira is a lifelong resident of Bucks County (except for college), where she lives in Doylestown with her husband and two teenage daughters. She works as a Health Educator, as well as an artist, homemaker, volunteer, gardener etc. Kira inherited her love of gardening and interest in local farming from her parents, who worked tirelessly on Farmland Preservation issues in Bucks County. Her mom is one of the original organizers of the Doylestown Farmer’s Market. Being so busy, Kira doesn’t have time to drive around to 5 different farms for her produce, meats, eggs etc., but she is passionate about supporting the local farmers and reducing the carbon footprint by buying local. She really wants one store she can go to for all of her local foods. She feels that the Co-op is the perfect place to put her energies and interest in eating healthy and doing something good for the community and can’t wait to gather a group of like-minded, Doylestown area residents to share ideas, interests and the bounty that this area has to offer.
Joel Metzger, Director
Joel moved to Doylestown in 1996 after “escaping” from Center City, Philadelphia, because he wanted to live in a friendlier community where every individual could shine. He also has a longtime respect for the sanctity of life itself. Put them together, and you get passion for our local co-op. As the tagline says, “Not just a way to get food; it’s our Community!” Community is top priority for Joel. A group of people who care about life and health – this is what Joel wants to be part of.
Joel is now retired from a professional background of freelance work with video production and a computer specialty. He loves Doylestown and is proud to live close to the Co-op and visit frequently. A major concern of his is the need for building sustainability in our area, and establishing a network of local sources for food and everyday needs.
Jen Robinson, Director
Lisa has lived with her husband, Steve, in Doylestown since 2004 and plans on doing so forever. Their grown children live in DC and in Salt Lake City, and, like Lisa, care deeply about the world in which we live. Lisa works part time as a Management Training Consultant and an Adventure Team-building Facilitator. Having spent much of the last six years of her life working to help create and sustain the Co-op, she has gratefully turned over her role as President and continues to help out where needed. Her commitment to the Co-op is grounded in her love of good food. What started as a selfish search for the tastiest and healthiest food led her to learn more about how food is grown and raised and the impact it has on our health, economy, and environment. Slow Food International has as it’s vision “We envision a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.” Lisa is committed to use her skills and passion to enable the Doylestown Food Market to continue to contribute to that vision. She also serves as a Board Member for the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance.
Kendall is well known in Doylestown as Empanada Mama! Kendall started her business making a variety of delicious empanadas and sauces in her home. The response was so positive, that she opened her own restaurant in the heart of town. In addition to her talents cooking and running her successful business, Kendall was a wiz at using social media to promote her fledgling business, a skill that will be of great help to the Doylestown Food Market! We are excited to bring Kendall's energy and entrepreneurial knowledge to our Board!
After rummaging around the world here and there, the freshly added adventure of fatherhood in 2011 inspired Colin to move back home to the Philadelphia area. A lifelong admirer of Bucks County and its unparalleled beauty, Colin officially moved, shortly thereafter, to the Doylestown area.
Year’s prior, Colin was both a frequent shopper at Weaver’s Way, and he briefly worked at the Ashland Food Co-op, in Oregon. Upon learning about the potential for a food Co-op in Doylestown, he immediately felt excited about the overall vision and he has become a committed and supportive member. It is absolutely fulfilling to be a part of such a progressive business, and it is an honor to be in service to the broader community goals.
In the last few years, Colin has co-created his own small, culturally progressive business, “The One I Feed”. The One I Feed integrates various lifestyle educators, primarily helping people through nutritional guidance and movement based therapies with fitness and The Feldenkrais Method.
You'll undoubtedly see Colin walking around town with his son Gryphon and his girlfriend Ashley. He is always happy to meet new people, so feel welcome and say hi!
Jim has been a resident of Bucks county since 1977, when he moved from California to Doylestown. In 1989 he married Cathy and in 1990 they moved to New Britain Township where they currently reside.
In 2011, Cathy dragged him to a presentation about the food co-op by Lisa White and others and both he and Cathy immediately loved the idea. They both love good, fresh, healthful food and want to keep local farmers, farming rather than have them yield to developers. They immediately signed up, were very much involved in the preparation for the opening of the store, teamed up with Susan Vorwerk to prepare the LFPP grant proposal and have been actively volunteering ever since.
Jim graduated from Brooklyn college with a BS in physics and before retiring, spent 45 years working in technical and management positions in the aerospace industry. He hopes that his analytical way of thinking and his problem solving abilities will benefit our wonderful co-op.
Andrea fell in love with the cooperative movement when she started at Weavers Way in 2011, and there's nothing she'd rather be doing. As a food co-op, we have an opportunity to shape and build a sustainable food system for the future by supporting our local farmers and producers, and that is an amazing thing to be a part of. She takes great pride in developing the product criteria at our co-op, and knowing that our shoppers can choose any item in the store, know where it came from, and feel good about the ingredients.
Past Director – Treasurer
Jennifer has been a resident of Bucks County since 1994. She fell in love with the Doylestown area after taking a few train rides from Philadelphia to visit friends. She graduated from Temple University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration – Accounting in 1999. Much of her professional career has been as an auditor and tax accountant starting at a large firm in Philadelphia then moving to a regional firm in Horsham. In those capacities many of her clients were either small businesses or not-for-profits. She currently has her own Accounting firm.
She currently resides in Doylestown with her husband and daughter.
Tom Cockley, Past Vice President
Doylestown has incredible resources. We have everything from the Michener Museum to the County Theater. I have volunteered for a number of organizations in and around Doylestown for many years. I recently retired from owning a medical device manufacturing company. After retiring I started a local chapter of Transition Town in Doylestown. After learning about what transition town was about, I realized that many of the food guidelines and principles are already here in Doylestown. It certainly did not make sense to re-invent the wheel. After doing more research I realized there is great synergy between both organizations.
My wife Marie and I always try to eat healthy. Marie being an excellent cook and experienced shopper is always looking for the best, most healthy, cost effective, local food available and that's what we found at the Doylestown Food Market. I feel that I can contribute my background and business experience to help the Doylestown Food Market to the next level of a sustainable community based organization and leave Doylestown in a better place for our children and grandchildren.
Susan (along with her husband, Ed and (maybe to a slightly lesser extent) their 13 year old son, David) strongly believes in the mottos: “garbage in… garbage out” and “you are what you eat”. The long-term implications of toxins in our food, water, and soil are (outside of her family) Susan’s primary focus in life.
When the Vorwerks moved to Doylestown in 2011 and learned about the Co-Op, Susan knew she had to get involved. She hopes that her experience as a small business owner in the UK; in public garden management; and in marketing for Fortune 100 companies, will be attributes that will assist the Co-Op with its goal of providing REAL food to the REAL people of Doylestown and its environs.
Gloria Dodd, Past Director
Gloria moved to the Doylestown area in the mid-sixties and raised two daughters- Kerri, who lives in Florida, and Kelly, who lives in Alaska. In 1983 Gloria and two partners created Charter Management Corp. a property management firm and in 1990 she had the opportunity to purchase the company and became the sole shareholder. Prompted by her visits to India and Tibet she opened a store called “Passages” and created The Inner Passage Center a spiritual learning center teaching Primordial Sound Meditation and Yoga.
Gloria’s outlook - we are all in this together and we can make a difference one person at a time. The Doylestown Food Co-op is a perfect example of this and a welcome addition to Doylestown and the neighboring communities.
We spoke to Lydia Grossov, graphic and web designer, owner of Expresso Design, initial designer and creator of our website, brand, and marketing materials for the Doylestown Food Co-op, past editor of The Appetizer newsletter, and a past Director of the Doylestown Food Co-op. This article is from our very beginning.
How did you get involved with the Food Club and Co-op
A little over a year ago I stumbled upon a meeting announcement, on Meetup.com, for a food buying club that was forming in Doylestown. Being a health conscious vegetarian since I was 19, and recently a new member to a local CSA I was truly intrigued by Steph Walker’s proposition: buy in bulk, as a group, directly from local producers and distributors to reduce our weekly run-around to get our goodies from local farms.
Thirty plus individuals crowded in Saxby’s meeting room, my husband Mauro and I included, to hear more about what Steph had in mind, give their input, ask questions and volunteer their help. It was the birth of the Doylestown Food Club and the catalyst to our ongoing efforts to build the Doylestown Food Co-op’s brick and mortar location.
Little did we know it, we got more than we bargained for when we volunteered that day. We've met a number of amazingly dedicated, hard-working people, many of whom we’re proud to call close and dear friends today. As the tag line of our newsletter states, the food club or our future co-op aren’t just a means of getting fresh, healthier, locally produced food and goods, they’re also helping build a stronger, supportive community that we can all learn from, grow together and be happy to live in.
Tell us a little more about yourself
I’m a 24-7 designer, always have multiple projects in the works (caffeine flows in my veins naturally, no coffee necessary), and tech junky — is that iPhone surgically attached to my hand? As a creative individual I’m very passionate about my work and the endeavors I get involved in, the food club and co-op are no exception. I constantly strive to improve my skills and the work I deliver, hence a new and improved co-op website this coming month.
Mauro and I, referred to as “the IT department” (Mauro does all of the coding end of the websites and maintains the food club’s online ordering system for the Food Club), almost always go everywhere together. We’re the dynamic duo and have been married, and best friends, for almost 16 years. We’ve lived in the Doylestown area for 11 years and absolutely love it here!
Linda Shanahan, Past Director
We spoke to Linda Shanahan, co-owner of Barefoot Gardens CSA, past producer coordinator for the former Doylestown Food Club, and a member the Doylestown Food Co-op. Linda was also active on our Steering Committee before we became a board.
Tell us a little about your home life and family
I live with my husband of almost 8 years, Eric. We came to Pennsylvania from Oregon in 2003. I miss Oregon, but have found more of a community with which I resonate since starting our farm and working with the food club. I hope that the co-op provides for a community center in which we can share and learn from one another while nourishing ourselves. I have felt a little lost in the wilderness at times since moving back here, but I keep meeting others who have felt the same way. It is hard to feel lost when you have so much company! Little by little, we create the place that we call home and work to make it better.
Why are you a member of the food club?
I want a co-op in town in which I can purchase local foods, bulk foods, and don't need to drive all over the county to get them. I am looking for the best food (preferably) locally produced in ways that are ethically sound and in which the producer is fairly compensated. The 7 principles of the cooperative model resonate with me and supporting local producers and locally owned businesses supports the local economy, and as a result, our community remains vibrant and viable.
What do you do besides your food club and coo-op activities?
I am a nurse at Doylestown Hospital in a Progressive Care Unit and assist my husband with his small organically managed vegetable farm. I am also working on a grant from the Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS) to plant 3 acres of our farm in Pennsylvania native trees, shrubs, herbs, and warm season grasses. I am very interested in native medicinal plants and hope to someday create some sort of educational program at our farm teaching about plants and habitat restoration and enhancement.
What causes are important to you?
Philosophically, the ideas of the Deep Ecology movement resonate with me, but I can't say that I live the values espoused, especially since moving to Pennsylvania. However, the establishment of a food co-op will help me in this effort. People are much more likely to use less, live more healthfully, share resources, and generally have smaller footprints on the earth if the communities in which they live supports this effort. Examples of things that I would LOVE to see more of in the area is a more connected bike trail network within Bucks County with connections to trails outside the county. I am a monthly sustainer of Penn Environment. I love Pennsylvania and the deep green lush temperate rain forests that are struggling to survive within it's boundaries. I want to see them protected.
Jess lives in Doylestown with her husband and young daughter. She can’t wait to have a Co-Op in Doylestown! Having grown up in the area, Jess values the idea of a practical shopping place where locals can easily access the bounty our nearby farms have to share. She is a school counselor, a blossoming gardener, and also worked in Program Management and Donor Relations for a Philadelphia non-profit. Jess got involved in the Doylestown Food Co-Op because she sees the environmental, economic, health, and social benefits of working together to draw from our own local resources. She was also interested in getting to better know the community of Doylestown area people who share a similar passion.
