On a Special Diet?
Doylestown Food Market is your Place to Shop
You may have heard of some special diets: vegan, paleo, gluten-free for example. But did you know there are a number of special diets that have been created to specifically address various ailments or conditions that people experience? The Doylestown Food Market carries many items designed for these special diets. One of our owners, Deborah Bernstein MD, MS in Bio-Nutrition, has trained our staff in understanding various diets. She has created a reference book for the staff so that they can look up which foods are not allowed on certain diets and which foods we have in the store that are recommended for those diets.
Besides carrying many items for vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free diets, we also have items to support those on the following special diets:
Elimination Diet: Designed to clear the body of foods to which you may be allergic or sensitive. You eliminate certain foods from your diet for a period of three to four weeks. If your symptoms improve, you carefully add back into your diet one food at a time.
Autoimmune Diet: Essentially a more restrictive elimination diet for those with autoimmune conditions. Emphasizes foods that provide the greatest amount of nutrients and eliminates foods that tend to stimulate the immune system or harm the gut environment.
Paleo Diet: A dietary plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic Era, about 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. Typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nut and seeds and limits grains, legumes and dairy products.
Ketogenic Diet: A high-fat, adequate-protein and low-carbohydrate diet. Forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Can be helpful with weight loss, diabetes, prediabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, brain injuries and acne.
Low Lectin (Plant Paradox) Diet: Lectins are proteins found in plants that plants use for self-defense against insects. Certain lectins can also be harmful to humans leading to autoimmune disease, arthritis, heart disease or other problems. This diet avoids grains, legumes, nightshades, most fruits, certain nuts and seeds, and dairy from A1 cows.
Microbiome Diet: We all have yeast, bacteria and viruses in our gut, some friendly and some unfriendly. Some of us have a healthier balance of these microorganisms than others. The Microbiome Diet eliminates foods that unhealthy bacteria and yeast like to eat and adds “prebiotic” foods that healthy bacteria like to eat.
Low FODMAP Diet: This diet is specifically designed for people who have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), where the bacteria that normally live in the large intestine have made their way into the small intestine. It’s been found that foods high in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) aggravate this condition and cause bloating and gas.
Whole30 Diet: A popular elimination diet that removes grains, beans, legumes, dairy, sweeteners, additives, alcohol and tobacco for 30 days.
